🛡️ PCI DSS — Scoping & Compliance

PCI DSS Compliance Consulting: Scope It Down, Lock It Down, Prove It

If your business touches cardholder data — even one payment terminal, even a phone order — PCI DSS applies. The difference between a painful PCI program and a manageable one is scope. We shrink your cardholder data environment first, then secure and evidence what remains.

  • Scoping and network segmentation that cut requirements dramatically
  • SAQ selection guidance — most businesses complete the wrong questionnaire
  • Quarterly ASV scans coordinated and remediated on schedule
  • The 12 requirements implemented as running controls, not policies
  • Acquirer and processor documentation handled at renewal

Scope Is the Whole Game

PCI DSS applies to every system that stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data — and every system connected to those systems. Read that second clause again: on a flat network, one payment workstation drags your entire environment into scope, and suddenly all 300+ sub-requirements apply to everything you own. Most PCI misery traces back to this sentence.

The professional move is aggressive scope reduction before any control work: point-to-point encryption so card data never touches your network, tokenization so you store references instead of numbers, and network segmentation that isolates whatever must remain. We have taken clients from “everything is in scope” to a cardholder environment of three devices — and the compliance effort shrank proportionally.

A typical engagement: a multi-location retailer was attempting SAQ D — the 300-question monster — because nobody had examined their payment flow. Validated P2PE terminals and segmentation requalified them for SAQ P2PE: 33 questions. Same security outcome, a tenth of the annual burden. That analysis cost one scoping review.

  • Payment-flow mapping before any remediation spend
  • Segmentation designed and verified with testing evidence
  • P2PE and tokenization guidance that removes data from scope
  • Right-sized SAQ — the difference between 33 questions and 300

The 12 Requirements, Grouped

The 12 Requirements, Translated

PCI DSS v4.0’s dozen requirements, grouped into the six goals they serve

Secure Networks (Req 1–2)
Firewalls configured and documented, vendor defaults eliminated — the requirement most often failed by equipment installed years ago and never revisited.
Protect Card Data (Req 3–4)
Stored data encrypted or — better — not stored at all; transmission encrypted with current TLS. Tokenize and this family nearly disappears.
Vulnerability Management (Req 5–6)
Anti-malware running everywhere, patches applied on a defined SLA, and secure development practices where you build software that touches payments.
Access Control (Req 7–9)
Need-to-know access, unique IDs with MFA (expanded sharply in v4.0), and physical controls on anything that touches card data.
Monitor & Test (Req 10–11)
Centralized logging with daily review, quarterly ASV scans, annual penetration testing, and segmentation validation — the evidence engine of PCI.
Governance (Req 12)
A maintained security policy, risk assessment, vendor management, and training — the requirement that makes the other eleven repeatable.
Your SAQ Determines Everything

Which SAQ Are You? It Decides Your Whole Year

Self-assessment questionnaires range from 33 questions to over 300 — payment flow determines yours

01
SAQ A / A-EP
Fully outsourced e-commerce (A) or sites whose payment page could affect the transaction (A-EP) — the redirect-versus-iframe distinction matters more than most developers realize.
02
SAQ B / B-IP
Standalone dial-out terminals or IP-connected terminals with no electronic storage — common for professional services taking occasional cards.
03
SAQ C / C-VT
Payment applications on isolated systems (C) or virtual terminals on a single dedicated workstation (C-VT) — segmentation keeps these short.
04
SAQ P2PE
Validated point-to-point encryption solutions only: 33 questions, the shortest form with card-present hardware — and the target we scope most clients toward.
05
SAQ D
Everything that does not fit above: merchants storing card data or with complex flows. If you are here, our first job is getting you out.
06
v4.0 Deadlines
PCI DSS v4.0 is fully in force — the future-dated requirements, including expanded MFA and e-commerce script controls, became mandatory in March 2025. If your last assessment predates that, your checklist is stale.

PCI DSS Compliance FAQ

What LA owners ask before outsourcing IT.

Does PCI DSS really apply to a business our size?
Yes — PCI has no small-business exemption. Merchant levels (1–4) change how you validate (self-assessment versus on-site audit), not whether requirements apply. A two-person shop with one terminal has PCI obligations; they are just satisfiable with a short SAQ when scoped properly.
What are the penalties for non-compliance?
Card brands fine acquiring banks, and acquirers pass fines to merchants — commonly cited at $5,000–$100,000 per month while non-compliant. The sharper risk is a breach while out of compliance: forensic costs, card reissuance fees, and potentially losing the ability to accept cards at all.
What changed in PCI DSS v4.0?
v4.0 raised the bar on authentication — MFA for all access into the cardholder environment, stricter password standards — added e-commerce payment-page script integrity requirements, and introduced a customized approach for mature organizations. All future-dated v4.0 requirements became mandatory March 31, 2025.
Do we need quarterly scans, and what is an ASV?
If you transmit card data over the internet or your SAQ requires it, quarterly external scans by an Approved Scanning Vendor are mandatory, with clean (passing) results filed. We coordinate the scans, remediate the findings, and file the attestations — most clients never see the portal.
Can compliance really be reduced this much by scoping?
Routinely. Scope reduction is the highest-ROI hour in PCI: validated P2PE removes card data from your network entirely, tokenization eliminates storage, and segmentation contains what remains. The security is real — data that never enters your systems cannot be breached from them.
Do you handle the paperwork with our bank?
Yes — the annual SAQ and Attestation of Compliance, ASV scan submissions, and whatever evidence your acquirer or processor requests at renewal. We keep the package current so the yearly filing is an export, not an emergency.
