  • Controls implemented in your real environment, not a policy binder
  • Evidence collection automated into daily operations
  • Auditor selection guidance and full fieldwork support

What a SOC 2 Report Is — and Why Customers Ask for It

SOC 2 is an attestation report issued by a licensed CPA firm evaluating your controls against the AICPA Trust Services Criteria — Security always, plus Availability, Confidentiality, Processing Integrity, or Privacy where relevant. It exists because your customers cannot audit every vendor themselves; the report lets one independent examination answer hundreds of procurement questionnaires.

The practical stakes are commercial. Deals stall in security review; a current SOC 2 report unsticks them. Companies pursue it when a flagship customer demands it, when procurement teams keep asking, or when sales decides to stop losing enterprise deals to certified competitors. The compliance is real, but the motivation is revenue.

What surprises most first-timers: SOC 2 does not prescribe specific technologies. It requires that you define controls appropriate to your commitments and then prove they operated. That flexibility is a gift with good guidance and a trap without it — vague controls fail audits exactly as often as missing ones.

  • Trust criteria scoped to what customers actually ask about
  • Controls that fit your stack — cloud-native, hybrid, or on-prem
  • Evidence generated automatically from managed operations
  • A report your sales team can hand to procurement the same day

What SOC 2 Actually Tests

The Control Families Auditors Examine

Where SOC 2 audits are won and lost, by domain

Access & Identity
Provisioning, deprovisioning, MFA, and access reviews — the family where auditors find the most exceptions, usually in offboarding.
Change Management
Documented, approved, and tested changes with a trail from request to deploy. Ad hoc production edits are audit findings waiting to be sampled.
System Operations
Monitoring, alerting, patching, and capacity — evidence that someone watches the systems and acts on what they see.
Risk & Vendor Management
A maintained risk assessment and security review of the vendors touching your data, with the paper trail SOC 2 explicitly requires.
Incident Response
A written, tested plan with defined severity levels — and post-incident reviews that show the plan is alive.
Availability & Recovery
Backups tested against defined recovery objectives, with restore evidence — required whenever the Availability criterion is in scope.
Type I vs Type II, Honestly

Type I vs Type II: What Buyers Accept and Auditors Test

The decision that sets your timeline and budget

01
Type I: Point in Time
Confirms controls are designed and in place on a specific date. Faster to reach — a credible first milestone when a deal is waiting.
02
Type II: Over a Period
Confirms controls operated effectively across 3–12 months. This is the report sophisticated buyers actually want.
03
Which One First?
If a contract is blocked today: Type I now, Type II observation starting immediately after. If you have runway: go straight to Type II and skip the duplicate audit fee.
04
The Observation Window
Type II evidence must span the whole window — a control that lapsed in month two shows up as an exception in month twelve. Operations discipline is the audit.
05
The Bridge Letter Trap
Reports expire in practice after twelve months. Customers asking mid-cycle get a bridge letter — but only if the controls kept running after the report was issued.
06
Year Two and Beyond
Renewal audits are routine when evidence never stopped accumulating. Our managed clients treat year-two fieldwork as a scheduled export, not a project.

SOC 2 Compliance FAQ

What LA owners ask before outsourcing IT.

How long does SOC 2 take from a standing start?
Typical path from zero: 2–4 months of readiness and remediation, then Type I; a 3–6 month Type II observation window follows, plus 4–8 weeks of auditor fieldwork and reporting. Compressed end-to-end: roughly 6–12 months, driven mostly by how many gaps the readiness assessment finds.
What does SOC 2 cost all-in?
Three buckets: remediation (varies with gap count), the CPA firm’s audit fee (commonly $12–40K+ depending on scope and firm), and ongoing control operation. We fix the first and third into predictable monthly costs and help you scope the audit fee down by right-sizing criteria and system boundaries.
Do you perform the audit yourselves?
No — and be wary of anyone who offers both. Only a licensed CPA firm can issue the report, and auditor independence means the firm attesting cannot be the firm that built the controls. We prepare you and support fieldwork; an independent auditor examines. The separation is what gives the report value.
Which Trust Services Criteria should we include?
Security is mandatory. Add Availability if customers depend on your uptime, Confidentiality if you hold sensitive business data — those two cover most B2B software and services companies. Processing Integrity and Privacy add meaningful scope; include them only when a real customer requirement demands it.
Can a small company pass SOC 2?
Yes — the criteria scale with your environment. A 20-person SaaS company with clean cloud architecture often reaches a report faster than a 500-person enterprise with legacy sprawl. Auditors evaluate whether controls fit your commitments, not whether you have an enterprise security budget.
What are the most common audit exceptions?
Offboarding accounts left active, access reviews skipped for a quarter, changes deployed without approval records, and restore tests that never happened. Every one is an operations habit, not a technology purchase — which is why controls run by a managed team sample clean.
